People downsize their homes for multiple reasons - accessibility, finances, minimalism, and more.

Downsizing means lifestyle change but it also comes with a ton of benefits. Smaller homes require less upkeep and have lower utility bills, which gives you more time to indulge in other interests.

With that said, trying to fit all your belongings into a smaller property can be a challenge, but if you plan ahead, you can reduce that anxiety and create the stylish home of your dreams!

Here are six tips for downsizing your life to live comfortably in your new home.

1. Start early

Downsizing is more intense than your typical move.

You’ll have to sort through a lifetime of stuff and the last thing you want is to do it in a rush. Start downsizing early, set goals for each room, and make sure others are on board.

2. Declutter

There are different decluttering methods that can speed up the process.

The most famous is the KonMari Method - hold each item in your hands and ask yourself, “Does this spark joy?” If it does not, discard it.

If you prefer a more clear-cut method, categorize your items into three piles: Yes, No and Donate/ sell. Don’t be tempted to have a Maybe pile.

3. Take pictures of sentimental items

You probably have many sentimental items that may not find room in your next home. To preserve their memories, take plenty of pictures so you can have something to look back on.

4. Sell valuables

Your beautiful antiques, furniture, and homeware can earn you some extra cash to help you with your move. Make a yard sale or find buyers from online marketplaces such as Craigslist, eBay, and Facebook marketplace.

5. Donate to charity

Give extra clothes, shoes, and household items that are still in good condition to local charities. Some organizations such as the Salvation Army and Vietnam Veterans of America can pick up unwanted items and leave you with a receipt for a tax deduction.

6. Take care of the junk

A lot of junk will be left when you finish packing, selling, and donating your stuff. It’s important to make sure that you get rid of it responsibly by taking it to the proper recycling center or waste management facility.
